Earthwatch Marine Debris Project - Understanding the effects of marine debris on wildlife

Marine debris is a major threat to biodiversity worldwide and its impacts are rapidly intensifying due the exponential rate at which refuse is released to the oceans.
More than six million tons of fishing gear alone is lost in the ocean each year, and this forms only a small percentage of the total volume of marine debris.
Debris has a direct impact on invertebrates, fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals, including threatened and endangered marine species.
